In Alberta, Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are nurses (RNs) with a special master’s degree which, similar to medical doctors (MDs), are allowed to see patients in medical clinics and hospitals. They have the competence and are licensed to:
- Provide comprehensive health assessments
- Diagnosis of illness and health conditions
- Treat and manage acute and chronic illness, perform procedures
- Order and interpret screening and diagnostic / laboratory testing
- Prescribe prescription medications
